Junior Varsity Basketball Season

JULIEN DUJARRIC & WILL GREENE — As you may or may not know, the Collegiate Junior Varsity soccer season in the fall was nothing but a failure. After a 2-0 victory against Riverdale on opening day, everyone saw a bright future for the team. Much to everyone’s dismay, these dreams were soon crushed as the team failed to win another game for the rest of the season, finishing with a record of 1-9-3 (W-L-T).

On the other hand, the Collegiate Junior Varsity Basketball team is having a historically great season so far. They are currently 10 – 4, after starting their season off with a bang. They cruised through Dwight with an astounding win, beating them 67 – 31. The Dutchmen were led by co-captain Dallas Christian who had a game-high twelve points. This strong win for the Dutchmen jump-started their season, comfortably winning their next game against Trinity.

The team was looking good, but that was when they encountered their first real challenge of the year. The Dutchmen traveled to Yonkers to match up against Horace Mann. The Dutchmen were without their freshman center, Tomel Lucas, who was a major contributing factor in the previous wins. The game became very choppy during the fourth quarter, where Dallas and Lincoln Solomon both picked up technical fouls. Unfortunately, the Dutchmen conceded a 63 – 55 loss, marking their first of the season.

The next practice, the team was preparing for their away game against Hackley, when a tragic event took place. Star sophomore Lincoln Solomon was driving to the rim and ran into the wall. He came down with a broken nose, and later found out that he had a concussion. This was devastating news for the Dutchmen, but they would have to find a way to keep winning. Julien Dujarric replaced Lincoln as the starting point guard, whose presence was felt in their next win.

Unfortunately, the next game against Dalton was a heartbreaking loss. The Dutchmen clawed their way back from a game-long deficit to make it a tie game, with Dalton retaining possession. Dalton proceeded to inbound the ball to their point guard. Julien, understanding the importance of the possession, played great defense and forced an awful shot. However, their center grabbed the offensive rebound and put up his first points of the game with a putback layup to seal the victory. The Dutchmen didn’t have much time to soak in the loss though, as their next challenge was a rematch with Riverdale.

The Dutchmen traveled up to Riverdale to face the Hawks in a much needed in-league win. The game started out slow, mainly due to Riverdale’s effective freshman center who dominated the boards. However, Coach Malcom Williams made some substitutions that would change the outcome of the game. In the second quarter, Will Greene knocked down several big threes to give the Dutchmen a 5-point lead at halftime. In the third quarter, he hit 3 more threes, supplemented by some clutch buckets from Dallas. The game came down to the wire, but the boys pulled out a much needed win, led by 26 points from Dallas, and 21 from Will (7 threes).

The team had back to back games, with Columbia Prep at home. Although this was an out of league game, the boys had to prevail with a victory. Columbia was 10-2 at the time, marking the Dutchmen as the underdogs. The game came down to the wire again. The Dutchmen had a 69-67 lead, but it was Columbia’s ball. Suddenly, a player on the Columbia bench yelled an explicit word, awarding a technical foul. The Dutchmen chose Dallas to shoot the free-throws. Madness ensued. Dallas missed his first free-throw, responding with a counter-curse word that got him his own technical foul. Fortunately, Dallas redeemed himself by making the second free-throw. Columbia made both their free-throws, retaining the ball with 5 seconds left. To everyone’s shock, they then committed an inbound violation! The Dutchmen took advantage of Columbia’s error, and ran out the clock for the one point win. They were lead by Will Greene (18 points), and Dallas Christian (17 points).
